KLAUS VOORMANN first met The Beatles in Hamburg in 1960. He was so blown away by their music that he brought his girlfriend, Astrid Kirchherr, to see and hear what excited him. Their friendship solidified and that friendship continues to this day. In 1966, John asked Klaus to design the album cover for Revolver. More recently, he designed the album covers for The Beatles Anthology Series.
As a musician, Klaus was the bass player with the Manfred Mann Band. He also recorded with George, John, and Ringo. When John was asked to perform in concert in Toronto in 1969, he invited Klaus to join him. When George put his band together for the Bangla Desh Concert in 1971, he chose Klaus.
JOEY MOLLAND is best known as a member of Badfinger, the Beatles’ protege band on Apple Records. From “Come and Get It” and “No Matter What” to “Day After Day” & “Baby Blue”, their driving sound made them an instant sensation in the early 1970s. In addition to his work with Badfinger, Joey played guitar on George Harrison’s albums All Things Must Pass and The Concert for Bangladesh and played on John Lennon’s Imagine.
LAURENCE JUBER was Paul’s lead guitarist from 1978 to 1980, a time that included the Back To The Egg album. Laurence will be premiering his third solo Beatles album at the FEST and also has a just released Holiday album. He has recorded over a dozen acoustic guitar albums and has won a couple of Grammy awards along the way. He will be performing some Wings hits with Liverpool during Saturday and Sunday evening’s concerts, in addition to his Sunday Afternoon Solo Acoustic Concert.
BILLY KINSLEY, a native Liverpudlian, is a founding member of The Merseybeats. In the early-60s, The Merseybeats often played at The Cavern Club on the same bill as The Beatles. During that time, they had hits with “It’s Love That Really Counts” and “I Think Of You.” Billy later became a session musician for Apple Records, working alongside George Harrison and others, before becoming a founding member of Liverpool Express in 1975. This is Billy’s first New York Metro FEST appearance! He is a great storyteller and has unique insight into those early days of The Beatles development.
MARK RIVERA, Ringo’s current Musical Director, premiered his first solo album, Common Bond, at the NYC FEST in 2014. His song, “Money, Money, Money” (with Ringo playing Drums) was voted the 8th Coolest Song of the Year on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on Sirius/FM. Mark, who performed with John Lennon in 1975, will be joining in the nightly jams and adding his musical knowledge on Sunday’s Musicians’ Forum.
DENNY SEIWELL first crossed paths with Paul in 1971 during the recording of Ram. He was a session drummer in New York City when the call came. Paul invited him to join his brand new band, Wings, soon after. This is Denny’s first appearance at the New York Metro Fest since 2012, and he’ll be performing some Wings hits in concert with other former Wings members Laurence Juber and Steve Holley, with Liverpool.
LOUISE HARRISON, George’s big sister, is the author of the recently published book, “My Kid Brother’s Band…a.k.a. The Beatles.” In 2016, Louise returned to the FEST for the first time in 16 years. This year she is bringing along her grandson, Tory Rodgers, who shares a resemblance to and encapsulates the spirit of his Grand Uncle George.
MARK HUDSON, Ringo’s former producer and Aerosmith hit-maker, who will be telling stories and jamming out all weekend. Mark’s infectious energy helps to drive the nightly concerts at each Fest and he’s got some surprises in store for August.
LIVERPOOL, our amazing Beatles tribute band, will be in concert all three nights. In addition to their performance of the entire Sgt. Pepper LP (side 1 on Saturday, side 2 on Sunday), Liverpool will be playing the Friday night dance party and will be thrilling attendees with their note-for-note renditions of more Beatles hits and deeper Beatles cuts all weekend.
BIRDS OF PARADOX is local artist Jeff Slate’s band that includes Steve Holley (Wings) as well as Gary Van Scyoc and Adam Ippolito from John Lennon’s Elephant Memory Band. On lead guitar is the one and only Jimmy Mack! This is their fourth appearance at the New York Metro Fest, and they’ll be recreating John’s One-To-One Concert on Saturday as we celebrate its 45th Anniversary!
THE WEEKLINGS will be playing songs that were written but never officially released by the Beatles, their infectious Beatle-inspired originals, and other Beatles cuts on Sunday. They’ll also be selling copies of their spanking new second album, Studio 2, so be sure to snatch one up!
SCHOOL OF ROCK is the leader in performance-based music education. At the FEST, their show team will be putting on concerts on both the Main Stage and the Apple Jam Stage on Saturday.
